Firework Season Prep: Helping Pets Feel Safe Before the Bangs Begin

For many pets, fireworks aren’t a celebration - they’re a source of genuine fear. Around half of all animals show signs of noise sensitivity or anxiety during firework season. But with a little forward planning, you can help your pet feel safe, secure, and supported.

Here’s how to get started - ideally 1–2 weeks before fireworks begin.

Build a Comforting Hideaway/Den (ideally 1-2 weeks before)

Give your pet a safe space they can retreat to when things get noisy. The goal is to create a den that feels familiar, protected, and soothing.

Dogs

Use a crate or table draped with thick blankets to muffle sound and block flashes of light. Keep the entrance open so they can come and go freely. Add favourite toys, treats, and a worn item of your clothing to build positive associations.

Cats

Offer a cardboard box or cat hide filled with bedding and familiar scents. Cats often choose their own hiding places, so don’t worry if they ignore your setup - just make sure their chosen spot is safe and accessible.

Rabbits and Small Furries

Provide a box packed with hay or bedding so they can burrow and feel secure. If they live outdoors, consider bringing them inside or covering their hutch to reduce noise and light exposure.

Pet-Proof the Room

Make your home a safe haven by reducing risks and escape routes:

  • Keep windows and doors closed, and limit access to the garden.
  • Lock cat flaps to prevent accidental dashes outside.
  • Rearrange furniture to block unsafe hiding spots.
  • Remove or secure electrical cables and chewable hazards.

Calming Products to Consider

Start using calming aids in advance so they’re working by the time fireworks begin:

  • ADAPTIL (dogs) and FELIWAY (cats): pheromone sprays or plug-ins that mimic natural calming signals.
  • PET REMEDY: herbal spray or diffuser suitable for all mammals.
  • YUCALM: calming tablets for dogs and cats, supporting relaxation and focus.
